Just after midnight on New Year’s Day, North Carolina’s new Democratic Governor Roy Cooper took his oath of office. Next Wednesday, January 11, the North Carolina General Assembly is scheduled to return to Raleigh for the inaugural day of the 2017-2018 Legislative Session. During this session, Senator Phil Berger (R-Rockingham) is expected to be elected to his fourth term as President Pro Tempore of the N.C. Senate and Rep. Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) is expected to be elected to his second term as Speaker of the N.C. House.

Because Republicans hold veto-proof supermajorities in both chambers of the General Assembly, the GOP is expected to have the upper hand when it comes to policymaking. Not to be outdone, however, Gov. Cooper is already making public statements and taking actions that have put him in direct conflict with legislative leaders. This all sets the stage for what is expected to be be a volatile and contentious session.

NC Family will be there through it all, and working together, we can continue to make a positive difference for our families and our state! Thank you for your support and partnership with NC Family!
