Building a Strong Educational Future: National School Choice Week

This week is National School Choice Week, where people across the country are celebrating the many educational options available. Here in North Carolina, we are blessed to have over:

  • 2,700 public schools
  • 800 private schools
  • 200 charter schools
  • 10 magnet schools

In addition to these, we have a number of online schools and close to 100,000 home schools. Education is one of the key predictors of a child’s future success, and our children deserve to have access to the educational environment that best meets their needs.

Here’s How You Can Support School Choice in NC

  • Learn more about National School Choice Week: The event website includes valuable information for parents, educators, and organizations, as well as information on what options are available in each state.
  • Learn more about school choice in North Carolina: Parents for Educational Freedom in North Carolina (PEFNC) offers valuable information, events, and alerts that will keep you informed about school choice in our state.
  • Encourage legislators to support school choice programs: This one is critical, as school choice largely relies on legislation. Make sure you are subscribed to NC Family’s emails and Action Alerts, where we will keep you informed on what is going on at the legislature.
  • Learn more about the resources available to families: This year, the North Carolina Legislature expanded the Opportunity Scholarship, which helps families with any financial barriers that might keep them from being able to choose the school that is the best option for their child. Another great resource is the NC Schools Around Me website, which gives information on schools in North Carolina so that parents can easily access the information needed to make an informed decision.

If you are interested in participating in School Choice Week, there will be events held across the state over the next several days. You can learn more about these events here.
