State Senate Authorizes Sports and Horse Race Betting on Tribal Lands

A bill to authorize betting on professional and collegiate sporting events and wagering on horse racing on tribal lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in Western North Carolina has passed the N.C. Senate. Yesterday afternoon, by a vote of 43-7, the full Senate approved SB 154–Allow Sports/Horse Race Wagering Tribal Lands. The bill now moves on to the N.C. House.

NC Family will continue to work to educate state lawmakers about the myriad of economic and social consequences that are inherent with the expansion of predatory gambling in our state. In fact, NC Family President John L. Rustin testified against SB 154 on three different occasions as the bill moved through committees in the State Senate. Thanks to those who responded to our Action Alert on SB 154 and contacted your State Senators about this bill! Now, we need to turn our attention to the N.C. House!

If you would like to contact your State House member and urge him or her to OPPOSE this harmful gambling bill, you can do so through the NC Family Action Center – simply locate the Tribal Gambling Action Alert and click “Take Action.”

We appreciate your continued support as we fight to protect North Carolina families, individuals, and communities from the dangers of predatory gambling!
