“The child is not the mere creature of the State; those who nurture him and direct his destiny have the right, coupled with the high duty, to recognize and prepare him for additional obligations.” So said the U.S. Supreme Court in the 1925 case of Pierce v. Society of Sisters. The State of Oregon had tried to ban nearly all private schools. And the High Court struck down that state law.
