Formerly a counselor at UCLA, Dr. Grossman is a regular columnist on Townhall.com, and speaks regularly to parents, students, legislators and health professionals about political correctness in her profession. This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with John Whitehead, founder and president of The Rutherford Institute, a nonprofit civil liberties and human rights organization located in Virginia. John, who is an attorney specializing in the area of constitutional law, discusses The Rutherford Institute’s, “12 Rules of Christmas,” which is a legal guide for students, teachers, parents, churches and public officials. The Manhattan Declaration
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Dr. Timothy George, Dean and Professor of Divinity at Samford University’s Beason Divinity School, about the “Manhattan Declaration,” a landmark Christian statement released in November that addresses three foundational Biblical principals: the sanctity of life, marriage, and religious liberty. Dr. George discusses the historic importance of the Manhattan Declaration, which he drafted along with Chuck Colson and Dr. Robert George of Princeton. (Dec 12, 2009) mp3wma

EEOC Targets Belmont Abbey College
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Eric Kniffen, an attorney with the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, about a religious freedom case involving Belmont Abbey College in Charlotte. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has accused Belmont Abbey College, which is a Catholic institution, of gender discrimination because it refuses to cover contraceptive drugs in its employee health insurance plan. Mr. Kniffen, who is assigned to the Belmont Abbey case, explains the history of the case, and the First Amendment issues involved. (Dec 5, 2009) mp3wma

Taxes in North Carolina
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Gerald Prante, senior economist at The Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan research group based in Washington, DC. Gerald is the author of a recent report analyzing the sources of tax revenue for all 50 states. He talks about where North Carolina ranks among the states in terms of where the State gets its tax revenue, and the overall state and federal tax burden on North Carolina’s citizens. Legislating Morality
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Will Kang, a law student and fellow with the Alliance Defense Fund’s Blackstone Legal Fellowship. Will interned at the North Carolina Family Policy Council this past summer, and he talks about one of the articles he wrote for the Fall 2009 issue of the Council’s quarterly magazine, Family North Carolina, which addressed the topic of legislating morality. He also discusses what he learned during his time interning at the Council, and how his internship helped strengthen his analytical skills. (Nov 21) mp3wma

The Truth Project In NC
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with GaryAlan Taylor, senior manager of The Truth Project at Focus on the Family. The North Carolina Family Policy Council is partnering with Focus on the Family to bring The Truth Project small group leader trainings to North Carolina. Seminars are scheduled for Greenville on November 21, Greensboro on December 5, Wake Forest January 9, and Charlotte on February 6, Boone on Feb. 27, Wilmington on March 20, and Jacksonville, on April 17. U.S. Marriage Index–2
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks continues a discussion he began last week with Elizabeth Marquardt, vice president for family studies and director for the Center for Marriage at the Institute for American Values (IAV). Elizabeth talks about some of the 101 recommendations for improving marital health in the U.S., which are found in the IAV report, The Marriage Index: A Proposal to Establish Leading Marriage Indicators. This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Moira Gaul, fellow and director of Women’s Reproductive Health at the Family Research Council in Washington DC. Moira discusses a new report on pregnancy resource centers (PRCs) that was recently released by the Family Research Council and entitled, A Passion to Serve: A Vision for Life. Health Care Reform—Medicare Option?
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Grace-Marie Turner, founder and president of the Galen Institute a public policy research organization that she founded in 1995 to promote an informed debate over free market ideas for health reform. Grace-Marie is co-author with Joe Antos of the American Enterprise Institute of a recent article in the Wall Street Journal that lists 10 reasons why Medicare should not serve as a model for health care reform. This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Doug Clark, director of field ministries for the National Network of Youth Ministries, where he also serves as promotion coordinator for the annual, student-led prayer event, “See You at the Pole.” Doug talks about this year’s “See You at the Pole,” and the rights of students to organize and participate in the prayer event, which is held at thousands of public and private schools nationwide. Home School Progress Report
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Dewitt Black, senior counsel with the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA), where he is responsible for legal matters involving the HSLDA’s members in 13 states, including North Carolina. Mr. Black talks about the HSLDA’s new progress report on home-schooling in America, which details how home-schooled students did on some of the most common standardized tests in 2008, compared to the national average. Dangers of Adolescent Sex - 1 & 2
In this two-part series, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Joe McIlhaney, M.D., founder and chairman of the Medical Institute for Sexual Health, about his new book, Hooked: New Science on How Casual Sex is Affecting Our Children, which he co-wrote with Dr. Frieda M. Bush. Dr. McIlhaney is an obstetrician-gynecologist, who previously served on the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, and on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He details the latest scientific findings on how casual sex adversely impacts the brain, particularly in adolescents, and explains why postponing sexual activity until marriage is the best choice every young person can make for his or her long-term sexual and mental health. DNA Evidence of Intelligent Design - 1 & 2
In this two-part series, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with Steven Meyer, Ph.d. about his new book, Signature in the Cell: DNA and the Evidence for Intelligent Design. One of the leading scientific experts on Intelligent Design, Dr. Meyer is senior fellow and director of the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute in Seattle. He is a former geophysicist and college professor. He explains the difference between Intelligent Design and Creationism, why Intelligent Design qualifies as a scientific theory, and why so many scientists who embrace Intelligent Design face persecution from the mainstream scientific community. Anti-Bullying Laws
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCPFC President, Bill Brooks talks with activist mom, Brenda High, the founder and co-director of Bully Police USA. Brenda’s son, Jared, committed suicide at the age of 13 as a result of bullying by his peers at school. Since his death, Brenda has become a passionate crusader against bullying and has helped lawmakers in several states enact anti-bullying laws aimed at protecting all students. She discusses two very different anti-bullying bills that have been introduced in the N.C. General Assembly this year, and explains why anti-bullying laws should NOT define victims. Eva discusses “Why Not NC,” a joint initiative between her group and North Carolina Right to Life aimed at getting the General Assembly to pass legislation that would give North Carolinians the opportunity to purchase “Choose Life” specialty license plates that help raise funds for pregnancy resource centers across our state. Defending Abstinence Education
This week on Family Policy Matters, NCFPC president, Bill Brooks talks with Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association (NAEA), about the latest attacks on abstinence-until-marriage education. Valerie, who is also a former abstinence educator, also discusses a letter the NAEA recently sent to (then) President-elect Barrack Obama. The letter, which was signed by hundreds of organizations, including the North Carolina Family Policy Council, asks Mr. Obama to meet with abstinence education leaders and to continue federal funding for AUM education. In the first part of a two-part series, NCFPC president, Bill Brooks talks with noted author and Christian apologist, Dr. Francis J. Beckwith, about his book, Defending Life: A Moral and Legal Case Against Abortion Choice. Dr. Beckwith is professor of philosophy and church studies at Baylor University in Texas. From 2006-2007, he also served as president of the Evangelical Theological Society. Dr. Beckwith explains the moral reasoning behind the pro-life position against abortion and discusses some of the common flawed arguments raised by abortion proponents. (January 10) mp3wma

The Real Planned Parenthood
This week on Family Policy Matters NCFPC president, Bill Brooks talks with Kristin Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America. Kristin talks about the organization’s undercover investigation of Planned Parenthood of Charlotte, North Carolina, where a student volunteer from NC State pretended to be the 15 year-old victim of statutory rape in order to find out whether clinic staff would report the crime or help the perpetrator continue his abuse. She also discusses the mission and purpose of Students for Life of America, and the general climate on college campuses today regarding abortion. (January 3) mp3wma
